Text A : The Pot of Gold
Ali and Mariam were Bedouin camel farmers. “Too
many camels, too many camels”, said Mariam.
“Not enough camels”, said Ali. The two of them were
always arguing.
One evening there was a gentle tap at the door. A little
man dressed in green asked, “Can I stay here for two
nights?” “Yes,” said Ali.
“No,” said Mariam.
One evening there was a gentle tap at the door. A little
man dressed in green asked, “Can I stay here for two
nights?” “Yes,” said Ali.
“No,” said Mariam.
“I can pay”, said the little man. He took two, shiny, gold
coins out of his pocket. “Well?” he asked, “Can I stay?”
“Yes!” responded Mariam and Ali together and for once they agreed about something.
“Good night and good luck!” whispered the little man all in green. Mariam laughed. “We never
have any luck,” she said. But this time she was wrong.
The next day Ali saw a big pile of stones in the dunes. He removed some of the stones and
discovered a heap of shiny, new, solid gold coins shining like diamonds! “I’ll run home and fetch
He put the stones back to cover the gold.
Ali told Mariam about the shiny, gold coins he had found. Ali grabbed a big bag. She said,
“People will see us and then everybody will want some of the gold. We’ll wait until it is dark. Just
think,” she said, “with all that money we can buy a new house.”
Ali said, “We don’t need a new house. But we do need some more camels”. They were shouting
so loudly that they didn’t hear the little man come downstairs.
“Please can you stop yelling?” he asked politely. The little man gave them both a strange look
and then slowly went upstairs. “Good night” he said, but this time he did not say “Good luck”.
When it was dark Ali and Mariam took the bag into the dunes to the pile of stones. Mariam

around and then he spotted another pile of stones and another and another. “That’s strange” he
thought.
Ali and Mariam looked around them. There were hundreds of piles of stones, each with a stick
on the table and a note saying “Keep looking”. They went to bed tired and unhappy.
Text B: The Wind
The wind whistles
Through the mighty ghaf trees.
It brings relief from the heat.
It moves this way,
It moves that way,
Picking up rubbish
Left by hungry visitors.
As the stars cover the night sky,
The wind slows.
The heat has gone,
Nothing moves
But the rubbish remains

1- Should students stop surfing the internet?Although the internet is useful and full of unlimited information, it has many bad effects on students, physically, educationally and psychologically. First of all, it can cause bad effects on health and hurt the eyes, the back and the neck. These damages happen because a student stays for a long time staring at the screen of the computer. Second, it may waste time and interfere with school work. Sometimes a student may leave the main work to surf another interesting site and forget about his main purpose. Moreover, it can make a student loner because of spending long time alone. Of course, when staying most of the day at home, friends and family members will not be seen. Finally, it is necessary to balance between surfing the internet and achieving other works and duties. We can have fun, but not before doing our main work.2- A comparison Between Eastern and Western CulturesA close look can show great differences between the culture of Europe and that of Asia. These differences vary in degree but are still considerable. "Is it true that the Westerns are superior to the Easterners?" On one hand, the East stand for spiritualism while the West for materialism, people of the East care more for the development of the soul and for life after death. But the Westerners are worldly minded. They do not care for any future life, but want to enjoy their present life. Hence, we find in the West a mad race for wealth, luxury and comfort. On the other hand, The Easterners are tolerant and self-sacrificing. They are peace-loving. They do not like to cause the least harm to others. They can bear the greatest hardship for others, and can sacrifice their own good for the common cause. Their social life is peaceful. The Westerners are quarrelsome and aggressive. They care more for their own good than for the good of others. No doubt, the Westerners have greater means of comfort and luxury, but all their worldly wealth does not bring them any greater happiness. They live in constant fear of war and destruction. The Easterners believed in the limitation of wants and so they are happy in spite of their poverty.3- City Life and Village Life Everybody can choose the place, where he would like to live. Some people prefer living in the city and others prefer living in the village, but what is really the best for us? First of all we should define our terms of reference. ‘Village` means a group of houses with a mosque, a school and some shops in the countryside; but `city´ means a place, where people live, work and have fun. It contains many houses, shops, places of entertainment, companies, universities, etc. Living in the city brings to everybody a lot of advantages. In city you have a lot of sport, cultural and education opportunities. Young people get more education and knowledge in town than in the country, and also when they want to get a job, they will easier find it in a city. Very often young people from the countryside move to the city just because they cannot find a job in their birth place. Also, a very big problem is that in countryside there are no hospitals, so if people are sick, they have always to travel to town. In city you can find more opportunities for everything because it is bigger and has more inhabitants than a village. It also has shopping centers, swimming pools, tennis courts, cinemas, , restaurants and a lot of other places, where we can have fun. However living in the city has also its bad sides. In the town there are pollution, traffic jams and noise. There are so many buildings that there are no trees, flowers and fresh air. 5- Compare between boys and girls.Who is Smarter: Boys or Girls? The Ancient Debate! It is said that women are not smarter than men, but they are more aware and recognizant! This has been a worldwide controversy notion since the beginning of creation. People seem to ignore the subject in order to avoid any embarrassment. Some say that boys are smarter in a way that boys are physically stronger hence; they can learn new experiences like building a house, or cutting a tree. While some advocate that girls are smarter because they are deep thinkers and imaginative! Though they are physically weaker, but they are much better than boys mentally speaking. They think before they act and they remain calm in crises. Boys on the other hand tend to reason things out and find practical solutions to problems. They don’t waste time and they like to hit the subject right away. That’s why boys don’t like to chat for hours on the phone without a goal. While girls are more emotional and tend to share their experiences, and that’s why girls are way better than boys in art. They tend to “split-hairs” and discuss more since they are minute about details. So, while boys consider girls talking on the phone boring, women find it very useful because they want to share their story with someone else.6- "Is studying abroad better or worse than studying in local universities.Advantages and Disadvantages of studying abroadNowadays, many people like to continue their studies outside their countries because they think that education in other countries is better than in their own countries. In my country, many students continue their studies overseas. Australia, Singapore, China and USA are the most favorite countries to study. Although studying abroad is a good choice, it has a lot of disadvantages. By moving to another country and staying alone we can gain more experience and depend on ourselves. However, we need a long time to adapt or else we can get homesick. Moreover, we’ll get the chance to improve the ability to speak a new language more fluently. For example, if you study in china, you will be forced to speak Chinese (mandarin) every time and everywhere. On the contrary, we may face many disadvantages like the standard of living and the new kind of free-friendship. The cost of living in other countries is quite expensive, so we need to spend more money. Also, the free-friendship means you may ignore or forget your own traditions. In conclusion, I think studying abroad is a good choice but we need to guard ourselves by avoiding drugs, and other illegal and strange behaviors.8- Some people are for school uniforms while others are against it. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Some people think that the debate about school uniforms is just about whether or not students look cool. In reality, this issue is related to other issues, such as student performance, money, and personal choice. The school uniform debate is very important to parents, teachers, and school officials—and to students, too! Many students argue that school uniforms would save their parents money. Kids whose families don’t have a lot of money wouldn’t be teased for their unfashionable clothes. Furthermore, some students are convinced that uniforms would help them focus on learning. I think it’s a great idea. Wearing uniforms would teach students that schoolwork is more important than looking good. Others believe that school uniforms would help students perform better academically. If all students have to wear the same uniform, they will try to impress others with their schoolwork and grades, not their clothes. Some students are against school uniforms. They argue that uniforms would actually cost their parents more money. “Uniforms are expensive and can only be worn at school. Moreover, school uniforms don’t allow personal choice. It is said that uniforms don’t allow students to be creative or express their own decisions about what to wear. Finally, many students say that uniforms are uncomfortable. Students like to wear comfortable clothes, and each student’s idea of comfort is different..9- Some people believe that students should have their cell phones with them at school. Other people think that schools should ban students from having their cell phones with them . Discuss this issue. Many young Emiratis own cell phones, for some of them; their use is for safety to be in touch with family and friends. School officials think that cell phones cause distraction in an educational environment. Cell phones have also been used in dishonest acts such as annoying people and cheating on exams. Some people think that cell phones are useless at schools because all students are in the same building and can find each other in the break or after school if they need to. In real emergency parents can easily call the school office or head teacher and get a message through to the student’s classroom. Moreover, I agree that some students who suffer from certain diseases should be allowed to have their mobiles with them in case of urgent incident. In conclusion, there should be a strict control concerning students having cell phones at schools. Cell phones may be allowed in certain demanding cases when a student wants to call parents for necessary things, and I believe not all students should have cell phones but those who are badly in need of them. 10- Should school be year-round?Much debate has been released concerning making the academic school year all year round. A lot of people show much support and agreement to this suggestion while others are against it. For me, it is really a good idea for students to stay learning all the year instead of being interrupted by the long summer holiday. This suggestion has many positive sides for some different reasons. In the first place, year round school enables students to learn more knowledge from school subjects, while students have long summer vacation they forget what they have learned. Moreover, it is expected that students’ score will be higher. Another advantage is that parents can have some control on their sons because they know where their sons are besides reducing misconduct acts by students during the summer holiday. To conclude, I think this idea must be encouraged as it has more advantages than disadvantages and students will have the chance to get more knowledge and learning. 11- Should there be specific jobs boys or girls? In my country parents usually make their little children do some jobs at home. They think working makes their children strong and responsible enough to depend on themselves. My father sometimes asks me to help him wash his car. And now I am very good in washing and cleaning cars. Also, my mother tells me to water the trees and plants in the house garden. Also I can make the bed and clean the windows. My sister doesn’t do these things. She helps my mother in the kitchen. She may feed and take care of her little brother. And she tries to decorate her and our bedrooms. In general, when a boy or a girl gets a job early in his or her life, this makes them successful parents who can manage their lives in the future.12- Should junk food be banned in schools?Wherever you walk you can see advertisements of tasty delicious hotdogs, pizza, and burger. To keep healthy and safe we have to avoid these kinds of food which are called junk food and eat fresh cooked food instead. The taste and shape of junk food tempt people to hurry and eat it. But unfortunately, this kind of food is full of fat and other harmful components that can harm the body and cause diseases. Diabetes and obesity are common diseases between students who depend on junk food in their diets. They suffer from high blood pressure and problems in cholesterol. To sum up, parents and teachers have great responsibility to advise and students tell the dangers of eating junk food. Instead of it they must look for vegetables, fruits, and cooked food because they are rich of healthy natural items.13- Some Parents encourage their children to watch TV and play computer games, others insist children should spend time doing useful things such as reading books, What is your opinion ?It is true that computer games widen the child’s imagination and urge him to think and explore the world through creativity, but I think doing useful activities or assignments is much more useful than spending long hours staring at the computer monitor. In the first place, using the computer for a long period of time may affect the child’s sight and body. It can lead to chronic diseases such as obesity which leads to diabetes , Moreover , Statistics has shown that children who spend hours on computer every day tend to be aggressive and violent whereas children who do not waste a lot of time on computer tend to become quieter and more peaceful. Secondly, a lot of parents have been complaining of their children spending much time on computer neglecting their school duties. Actually, it has been found out and become certain that students who use the computer regularly a day ignore their school assignments and have achieved less than those who rarely use the computer. To conclude, it is the role of the parents to regulate the situation, children can have time for recreation but should not neglect their academic demands at the same time. 14-Should principals and teachers be allowed to check lockers and backpacks for magazines and personal photographs whenever they want to?Principals and teachers should be allowed to check lockers and backpacks for magazines, mobile phones and other illegal things that students may bring to school. This procedure makes schools safer. In my school most of the students are good and polite, but bad ones may cause big troubles to others. Sometimes a student may bring photos or pictures of bad naked girls. He likes to misbehave, and likes to make others misbehave like him too. Moreover, some other students may bring cigarettes with them to smoke and to teach others how to smoke. In rare cases a bad student probably brings a knife if he has a problem with another student. What about drugs? Although it is unfamiliar to find drug dealers in our school, it is not wrong to consider that. Teachers must not let drugs get way to their kids in school. In general, this way of controlling students in schools makes them more discipline inside and outside schools. Although close watching upon students makes them feel less free, it is very important to keep them safe. 15- Should the legal driving age be changed from 18 to 21 years of age?Car accidents are common nowadays all over the world . One of the most important reasons for road accidents is careless drivers or those who drive without having a license . Fixing a certain age to obtain a driving license is a controversial issue. So there has been a crucial debate whether adults could get a driving license at the age of 18 or 21. In fact the legal age of obtaining a license is different from one country to another,. I think governments around the world should inact a law that specifies an age of 21 for every one who would like to get a driving license.
16- How to protect the environment from PollutionPollution has become a major and a serious problem in our daily life. It is the source of many dangerous diseases. Actually, there are many types of pollution that affect our environment and our health. Noise, land, water and air pollution are the most serious ones. Nowadays the land is polluted by plastic bags and household rubbish; these can cause illness to the health. Oil tankers spill their oil in the sea which leads millions of sea animals to death. Noise is caused by trains, cars, road works and TVs, all these sources can cause deafness and stress. To conclude, it is our duty to keep our environment clean and safe by organizing clean-up campaigns and educational programmes. Voluntary WorksVoluntary work is very important because it has great effects locally and internationally. There are many people in the world who devote much of their time and effort in helping other people or even in protecting the environment from pollution. For example, there are people of different ages in the UAE who can do voluntary works such as protecting wild life against threats, some people are keen on keeping the environment from pollution because pollution is very dangerous to health and causes many serious diseases such as cancer. I know many people who donate blood to help sick people, besides others who travel abroad to assist poor nations by building houses, schools and hospitals even teaching freely at their schools. To conclude, voluntary work is a noble thing to do. It must be encouraged because many people in the world need much help. There are also other environmental issues need to be solved and this cab be done through voluntary work.Should Smoking Be Banned in Public Places? Many studies and scientific researches have proved that smoking is injurious to health. And since smoke is unhealthy it affects the smokers and the others who are near to them inhaling their smoke as passive smokers. Both are equally affected by the ill effects of smoking. Smokers and non-smokers meet in many places like offices, buses, hotels, etc. So, considering the bad effects of smoking on individual’s health it should be banned in public places. According to recent studies, smoking is more harmful for teenagers. The people who start smoking at an early age reduce from certain disabilities. Their speed and accuracy to grasp information reduces and it becomes difficult to retain it in mind. Scientists have also discovered that smoking can cut 11 years off a woman’s average life expectancy. And in case of man, it takes 3 years off. They even added that women are more susceptible to the commonest form of lung cancer. If a pregnant woman smokes, it is not only harmful for her own health but also for the expected baby. But if a government cares for the health of its citizens, it should rise above the economic consideration and find a way out for this. So, the government should ban smoking at least in public places. To conclude, banning smoking in public places will give some justice to the non-smokers. Separate smoking sections should be introduced in workplaces. The smokers can go to that section for a puff and at least leave the non-smokers free of pollution.Write about an event that you never forgetLast year when I was going with my friends to a festival in Dubai, many bad strange things happened with us. It was an unforgettable day. First, the car broke down when we were in the middle of the way. We called a tow truck and moved to a garage. We left it there and rent another car. Then, we arrived to the festival place. It was very interesting to see people having fun there. But unfortunately our friend Ali lost his wallet. We started looking for it here and there but in vain. Meanwhile Ahmad shouted, "Ali disappeared". So we began looking for Ali for more than an hour. At last, we decided to leave with out our lost friend. Then, we were shocked when we saw Ali standing besides the car waiting for us. In fact, we were very unlucky that day. Every thing went the wrong way. But we thanked Allah that we came back home safe. I will never forget that day all my life.
